HKIOA Acoustics Awards 2023

Please complete, sign and return the Application Form to the HKIOA via email at awards@hkioa.org for the attention of the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, “HKIOA Acoustics Awards 2023” on or before 5:00 pm (Hong Kong time), 15 June 2023 (Thursday).
- Recognising good acoustic projects or products in Hong Kong;
- Encouraging good & innovative acoustic designs; and
- Promoting HKIOA, their members and the acoustic industry to the public.
Categories
| Description |
---|---|
Environmental Noise | This category awards the framework, program or approaches in demonstrating the importance of construction and environmental noise management and mitigation. |
Architectural Acoustics | This category awards projects or systems that deliver high sound insulation standards and distribute a distinguish sound quality in indoor spaces. |
Product / Material Invention | This category awards the new product or service breakthrough. The creations should demonstrate significant impacts on the acoustics industry. |
IT Application | This category awards the idea, prototypes or system that illustrate the possibility of integrating the acoustics systems with AI, IoT and other digital-related applications. |
Other Excellence | This category awards the other outstanding works or concepts that illustrate the remarkable influence in the acoustics industry. |
The eligibility and terms of reference of the submissions:
- The submissions shall be related to acoustics, noise, sound or vibration.
- Each submission is only eligible to any one of the five categories.
- The applicant shall be a HKIOA member.
- Each HKIOA member shall submit no more than 5 submissions.
- Each company or organisation shall have no more than 2 submissions in each category.
- The project/product to be submitted should be completed within 5 years before the submission deadline.
- The company or organisation of the Technical Committee member or the Organising Committee member or the Jury Panel member is allowed to join the competition. A member who has a potential conflict of interest shall declare to the OC chairman during the whole course of the event.
- The submission is free of charge.
- The assessment will be conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the submission will be assessed against the judging criteria. Shortlisted submissions will be invited for a final presentation to the Jury Panel in the second stage.
- In the first stage, a paper shall be submitted for assessment, which shall include the title of the project (English and Chinese), the name of the applicant with HKIOA membership number and the affiliation, the contact point and other names of the participant(s) of the competition (with title, telephone number, email address, posting address and affiliation), 200 words of abstract, description of the project, photos, figures and reference. The paper and the major content shall be written in English. For the clarity of reading and fairness, the overall length of each submission shall be not more than 10 pages in A4 size. All texts including the captions and axis texts shall not be smaller than font size 10 and larger than font size 12, and at least single line spacing. The file size shall not be more than 20Mbytes.
- In the second stage, a face-to-face presentation to the final jury panel shall be arranged. The presentation can be conducted in English or Chinese. Each finalist shall have 20 minutes for the presentation and with 10 minutes question-and-answer session. The presentation file including all the media files (video and audio) shall be submitted to the organiser at least 2 weeks prior to the final judging day.
- It is the responsibility of the participants about all the copyright issues of all the materials submitted to the organiser for the competition.
- The participants shall agree that the event organiser has the right to publish the full or part of the contents of their submissions for educational and promotional purposes.
- The submission with copyright issue in further publication may be subject to disqualification, with the consideration by the jury panel or Organization Committee.
The assessment criteria are proposed as follows:

Practicality | How well does the technology/design/approach can be widely adopted and applied. |
Concept | How well does the project/product fulfilling the design objectives. | |
Innovation | How well does the project/product demonstrate innovative and/or raise the standard of the profession. | |
Excellence | How well does the project/product demonstrate enhance the living quality and environment and demonstrate the importance of acoustics. | |
Professional Knowhow | How well does the solution affect people and/or create an experience. | |
Challenges | How well does the project/product demonstrate skilful mastery over the challenges. | |
Practicality | How well does the technology/design/approach can be widely adopted and applied. |
At any instance, the jury panel shall have the final recommendation of the award to the OC, and the OC of the event shall have the final decision of the award.
Awards will be granted to the project or product. The following prize shall be presented to the winners:
Grand Award (best of the best) | Present to the submission that is judged among all submittals to be the best (based on the highest point scored). |
Gold, Silver, Bronze Award | Present to the top 3 submissions with the highest scores of each category. |
Merits | There will be recognition of merit(s) for each category. |
Student Award | Present to the top 3 submissions by the student applicant with the highest scores.
